Windsports

SPORTS. Part 2

WINDSPORTS

Sailing - the sport or activity of travelling across water in a sailing boat. The earliest representation of a ship under sail appears on a painted discfound in Kuwait dating between 5000 and 5500 BC. Although sailing as a means of transportation predates history, sport sailing—or yachting—seems to have originated in the 17th cent. in Holland. From there it was introduced into England (c.1660), and eventually spread to the American colonies. Then, as now, it was common for sport sailors to join together for social and recreational purposes in groups known as yacht clubs.

Ice yachting (ice boating) - is the sport of sailing and racing iceboats, also called ice yachts. It is practiced in Austria, Germany, Great Britain, Poland, Norway and Sweden, to some extent, and is very popular in the Netherlands and on the Gulf of Finland, but its highest development is in the United States and Canada. An ice boat (iceboat) is a sail boat fitted with skis or runners (skates) and designed to run over ice instead of through water. Sailable ice is known in the sport as "hard water" versus sailing on liquid or"soft" water.

Land sailing (sand yachting, land yachting) - is the sport or activity of driving wheeled sail-powered vehicles across land, especially beaches or dry lakes. It has evolved into a racing sport since 1950s. Vehicles used in sailing are known as sail wagons, sand yachts, or land yachts. They are typically three-wheeled vehicles that function much like a sailboat, except that they are operated from a sitting or lying position and steered by pedals or hand levers.

Sail biking - using a power kite to pull a specialized bicycle (like land sailing), called the whike. The Whike is a recumbent tricycle with a sail, made in the Netherlands. (more about the whike)

Kiteboating (kite boating) is the act of using a kite as a power source to propel a boat (motorboat or sailboat). The activity occurs in lakes and in open seas. Records of ocean crossing have been made. Placing turbines in the boat's hull lets the kite power generate electricity on board.

Kiteboarding (kitesurfing) - the sport or pastime of riding on a small surfboard (kiteboard, wakeboard) that is propelled across water by a large controllable kite to which the rider is harnessed.

Kite buggying  is similar to land yachting, windsurfing or even yachting, and therefore much of its terminology(Yachting Glossary) and technique has been adopted from these activities. A kite buggy is a light, purpose-built vehicle powered by a traction kite (power kite). It is single-seated and has one steerable front wheel and two fixed rear wheels. The driver sits in the seat located in the middle of the vehicle and accelerates and slows down by applying steering manoeuvres in coordination with flying manoeuvres of the kite. The speed achieved in kite buggies by skilled drivers can range up to around 110 km/h (70 mph). Kite buggies are classified as "Class 8 Land Yachts" by FISLY and kite buggying competitions are often based on established land yachting guidelines. The kite buggy was probably invented in China around the 13th century.

Kite flyingthe game or sport of flying a small airfoil by a standing ground operator using 1-4 flying lines.

Kite jumping (Power Kiting) (instructions) - brief acrobatic flight using a large kite. Kite jumping is probably the most dangerous form of power kiting. The pilot uses a large kite to lift him/her self off the ground for brief periods of time. Without doubt the most dangerous thing about kite jumping is the landing, which is difficult to control.

Snowkiting - The sport of being pulled across snow or ice by a power kite while riding a snowboard or wearing skis. Snowkiting is becoming increasingly popular.
  • Kite skiing is a relatively recent development of skiing where the pull comes from a kite. It can be done on water, snow, land or ice.
  • Snow kiteboarding

Windsurfing (boardsailing, sailboarding, windsailing) - the sport of sailing standing up on a sailboard that is equipped with a mast, sail, and wishbone boom. Windsurfing combines elements of surfing and sailing. Some credit S. Newman Darby with the origination of windsurfing by 1965 on the Susquehanna River, Pennsylvania, USA when he invented the "sailboard", which, incidentally, he did not patent. In 1964, Darby began selling his sailboards.
